Spectacular expansion of an already detailed and developed world. One of the greatest final lines in literature.

Perhaps my favorite book in the series so far. We follow a new set of characters on a new continent, which seems a bit intimidating at first. However, Trull from the previous book is a main character in this book, which helps us get into the Tiste Edur part of the story and we have seen Erikson introduce new characters and places before and delivered in making them awesome.
Overall this book is great because of the different characters, the themes of brotherhood, power and greed. This book has some of the funniest characters in Tehol and Bugg, some of the most layered characters in Trull and Rhulad and some of the most bad ass scenes with Iron Bars and some other cool characters. I really liked this book and I'm eager for the next book, as well as eager to learn how this book fit into the rest of the Malazan story

Liked
Beddict brothers especially Tehol and bugg. Would have read a book of just them trying to collapse an economy tbh
Sengar brothers. Ruhlad started off annoying but had a v interesting story overall.
Letheras as an empire was cool and it was interesting to see other parts of the world.
Disliked
Udinaas and feather witch were probably my least favourite part of the book. Although Udinaas’ relationship with rhulad was interesting in the second half of the book.
Because it was a whole new continent it took a while to get going. This was a pro and a con because as mentioned previously got to see more of the world and it’s cultures as a result of the whole new continent
I understand why there was a whole reframing of the magic system due to the limited knowledge of these characters but the holds and all of their roles became meaningless to me. This meant that when feather witch did her tile castings I had no clue what was happening or if it was relevant. Enjoyed it anyway so I guess it wasn’t!
Overall, I very much enjoyed the book. Due to the scope there’s always bound to be characters I resonate less with than others. I’m still very much looking forward to seeing what happens next.

First, I really enjoy the series. The world building done I this series is second to none and the plots are always twisting and unpredictable … which is fantastic! The cast of characters is huge and sometimes can be unwieldy but I think that is my limitation and something I can manage if I take the extra time when reading the books.
For some reason, this book was easier to read than most and the humor injected into this book was unexpected and very enjoyable.
I’ve heard that the plot line was sort of harder to see in the middle books in the series but I did not experience this. If anything this book only sharpened my excitement to read the next book. Big thumbs up for me!
