2025 reread - Fantastic. Favorite in series so far, again.
2021 - Okay, I’m hooked.
This was my favorite book in the series. Its the first one I could not put down.
From reading other reviews, it seemed books 2 and 3 are most people’s favorites. While I liked those, books 4 and 5 are my favorites. I think I am just used to this world so things that made less sense early on just make sense now. In other words, I really want to reread this series because there is so much depth and connection across the books.
But I also want to find out what happens! Because there are some great characters in this book and previous books who, I assume, are all on a trajectory to meet up. Also, the primary antagonist is continuing to emerge and the strings being pulled are more apparent. On that note, I hate Rhulad while I feel bad for him at the same time. That mixture of feelings proves a well-written character.
On to book six!
2021 - Okay, I’m hooked.
This was my favorite book in the series. Its the first one I could not put down.

This book blew me away. Although it is a reset of the Malazan epic with completely new characters in a new continent, this book sucked me in from the first page.
The characters and plot were engaging, but more than anything the themes underpinning this book really resonated with me. Whether it was the destiny (Manifest or otherwise) of civilizations, or the birth and promulgation of myths and it's interplay with history, or the nature of evil these are themes close to my heart.
If you haven't read any Malazan book and are debating which one to pick up, this one, even though it is the fifth in the series may not be a bad choice for first Malazan book.

Slow and dark. Enjoyed one storyline out of too many to count.
Jak do tej pory jest to najsłabszy tom sagi i pierwszy, który tak nisko (relatywnie do pozostałych) oceniam. Tytułowe "przypływy" musiały wziąć się od wodolejstwa, które uprawia autor. :) Ubolewam nad faktem, że cykl był pisany na zamówienie wydawcy, który określa m.in. ile tomów ma wyjść oraz jakiej objętości. Szkodzi to opowieści, bo autor, żeby wyrobić normę, musi o czymś pisać, a przedstawiona historia na pewno nie wymaga ośmiuset stron. W ten sposób dostajemy spuchniętą powieść, która się dłuży. Humor był wymuszony, bardziej żenujący niż śmieszny. Wiem, że autora stać na coś lepszego.
W "Przypływach nocy" przenosimy się zarówno w czasie i jak przestrzeni - akcja dzieje się może gdzieś w trakcie dwóch pierwszych tomów sagi, a może nawet jeszcze wcześniej (nie chciało mi się sprawdzać dat). Poza tym rozgrywa się na jakimś nowym kontynencie, poza Trullem Sengarem i Okaleczonym Bogiem nie spotkamy tutaj żadnych znanych postaci. Wierzę, że ta opowieść wkomponuje się idealnie w całość, ponieważ widać jak wszystkie opowieści z Malazańskiej Księgi Poległych układają się jak puzzle. W tej chwili jednak mam wrażenie jakbym przeczytał jakiegoś spin-offa.
Cywilizację Tiste Edur sobie inaczej wyobrażałem, myślałem że stali znacznie wyżej niż ludzie. Jednakże "design", że użyję takiego określenia, postaci Rhulada jest oryginalny, akurat ten wątek przypadł mi do gustu.
Jestem przerażony, bo kolejne tomy są jeszcze grubsze i mają mniejszą czcionkę!
