This was a hard and long read for me. I see why it is so highly rated by many but it just wasn't for me.

The author writes in such a beautiful and abstract way that is purposfully hard to follow at times. It almost feels abstract and I wish it was something I'd been able to discuss with others to really get the richness of the story.  I'd highly suggest finding someone to read with so you can dicuss all of the symbolism this story is full of.

It is also emotionally hard to read. It doesn't shy away from the details of slavery and life after being freed.

What can I say? The book put me in a reading slump, yet I still found myself appreciating the story.

A tough, but important read.
Intense and disturbing, but most of all full of truth.

It's not a book I would recommend to everyone, and it's not one I particularly enjoyed (although the writing was beautiful), but it's a story that made me think and consider how different decisions can be when life has been lived in a context that is so far flung from my own.

Thought provoking and moving and important.
