Each short story is sort of like a less extreme Black Mirror episode - and by that I mean all the more believable. It reads like nonfiction, which I think makes it effective at exposing the more banal structures of oppression. The title story was one of the best short stories I’ve ever read. I lost my breath at the end of it. And proceeded to cry, which if you’ve read any of my other reviews, is becoming a theme among the literature I like the most.

Vivid stories that stay with you long after you've turned the last page. Ms. Evans has a way of revealing the details in her stories slowly. She doesn’t announce or Telegraph her moves but thrusts the reader in the middle of the character’s reality with no orientation. This, the reader must grope around a bit looking for the proper illumination to piece everything together. A memorable collection. The perfect end of year punctuation mark after reading Warmth of Other Suns and The Vanishing Half this summer.

Every single one of these short stories were so good, they touched on aspects of being Black in America that I had not totally considered before, especially the titular story. I think the story about the girl and the child as well as the wedding story were my favorites(?) but they were all honestly just so well written and honest and the characters were so complex for how little page time they had in comparison to other things I’ve read
