In the pursuit to clear my Kindle and by random pick, The Gravity of Us became my first read of 2024. I read the second book of this series, The Fire Between High & Lo, several years ago as part of an online buddy read and really enjoyed it.

Oh,  Graham Cracker...
Despite your rude and insensitive ways, my heart ached for you. But leave it to Lucy and her "hippie weirdo" ways to spark a light in your darkness. Two people could not have been more opposite while also providing just what the other needed.

In this grumpy meets sunshine tale, the romance could not have burned slower and the spice was minimal, yet the pull between these two was undeniable.

I shed some tears with this one and usually that would garner a five-star rating from me, but I was a bit put off by the recurring "Air above me, earth below me, fire within me, water surround me, spirit becomes me." mantra. While definitely fitting to Lucy's character and the overall theme of the series (Elements), it just felt a little out of place in a book with no magical realism. Or, I don't know, maybe some background as to how and why it was such an important mantra to Lucy would have helped it feel organic to the storyline.

Overall, this was a great book and I do plan to go back and read books 1 and  3 in this series of standalones.

A beautifully crafted, poignant story with an opposites-attract kind of feel. The protagonists, Lucy and Graham, take you on a journey, and their story is fraught with difficulty and full of angst. Which makes their ending all the sweeter, as it’s earned through blood, sweat, and tears.

3.5 Stars ⭐️ Beautifully written story ❤️ this was my first book by this author and it didn’t disappoint. Heartbreaking love stories aren’t my go-to, but every once in awhile they are good for the soul. This was perfect for that.

WRITING: Easy enough to understand and not flowery w/c is much appreciated.

PLOT & EXECUTION: Depressing and very soapy. Also very problematic. It was at times cheesy and predictable.

CHARACTERS: Forgettable

FAVE EXCERPT:
“But, you are my heart, Mari, and I know I’m yours. So, when they hurt you, find me. Find me and I’ll put your heart back together, and then maybe you can help me fix the cracks in my own.”

I laughed, cried, and fell in love. The story was so beautiful. The words, they are just... wow. I love how the words and sentences blend in together perfectly that makes you feel like you're reading a poetry instead of a novel. I guess that's the only flaw of this book, there are a lot of "fluff" rather than "meat". If this is a poetry, I wouldn't mind. But for a novel, it somehow appeared excessive.

4.5 MAKTUB-GRAHAM CRACKER-STARS!

Loved!!! I loved every single thing about this book!! EVERY THING!! A gorgeous, angst filled, emotional masterpiece. I didn’t want to stop reading. The Gravity of Us is beautifully written and the characters are out of this world. Lucy and Graham are complete opposites that work! I love Lucy’s free spirit and big heart. Graham is cold and blunt but his interactions with his daughter, Talon, and sweet gestures towards Lucy melted my heart. I fell hard for these two. I think this book may be my favorite of the series. I just loved it so much.
I don’t know what it is about Brittainy Cherry books but there is a wave of happiness that overtakes me every time I finish one of them. It’s like all the tears I shed while reading purges all the negativity out of me and I’m left with a feeling of peace. Her books, the Element series especially, are my medicine.

This book is considered a romance and as there is the ongoing slow burn of our main characters, it is so much more. It is about being an adult and trying to overcome your child abuse. It’s about the love and hatred of three sisters. I found those themes more prominent throughout. Sure there is one paragraph near the end that is a sex scene. But I am giving it 5 stars for the superb writing and the family dynamics that had me hating characters and tearing up many times.

At first I was wary of reading this since the synopsis was so vague, but it was totally worth the read. One thing this book is not is smut. There is no raunchy cheesiness that most contemporary/new age romances have. However, it is definitely a romance, and probably the best one I've read to-date.

Lucy and Graham are definitely opposites, but that's what makes their story so appealing. I love how Lucy feels everything and Graham, not so much. Lucy is the kind of person I would like to be she is open an honest, and somehow her being her she's able to warm Graham up. She reminds us that we ourselves are enough, which I think we forget sometimes. I love her quirky "hippie stuff".

It sounds cliche, I know, but I cannot deny how well written this book is. How much passion there is between the two main characters. I love how well developed the other characters are (the sisters, Oliver, Mary) everyone's role is significant and most importantly complete.

I would give more stars if I could. This book is a bit on the emotional side, but I think that's what happens with works that are real and so relatable.

I will definitely be reading the other books in this series, which I have been told can be read as stand alone novels.
