i really, really enjoyed the writing style in this one! the way in which the narrative pokes fun at amory is so much fun, and the clash between his arrogant, self absorbed personality and his low self esteem (particularly when he was younger) makes him such an interesting character (and, in some ways, relatable; although it is uncomfortable to admit that, since he is also entirely aggravating). the portrayal of the time period is incredible, and can be felt not only in the characters and their ideas, but also in the restless, playful form and rhythm of the prose.
Did not like the poetry, did like the ramblings of ideas. Definitely can see how this a debut. Good, but not great.
Yes, it took me three and a half months to read this. BUT that is not a reflection of the book, and I would round up to 4.5 stars if I could because beginning was just a tad slow for me — otherwise, I would have given it a 5. Fitzgerald, as always, creates such a complex and nuanced character in Armory Blaine, and the brilliance of Fitzgerald as a writer is astoundingly apparent in his debut novel. Truly fed my English teacher heart <3
