Really, the three stars are only out of respect for Olivia and Grandmère and Tina, because seriously, this book was Just No.
Mia mocks her teenage self for being too self absorbed while maintaining the same annoying quality to this day? Just No.
Mia still gets weirdly panicked thinking Michael is going to break up with her after all these years? Just No.
Mr. G dying just for the sake of a lazyass rekindled love storyline? Just No.
Mia still talks about Tina in a condescending way even though they've grown up and she's clearly in pain and is also a medical student? Just No.
Lilly and Lars? Just No.
Helen and Philippe getting back together out of nowhere because Philippe had another secret daughter and therefore was more complex than Helen had realized? Just No.
Philippe abnegating? Just No.
Helen moving to Genovia because of Philipe? Just No.
The whole flippant baby business? Just No.
Mia considering Lilly as godmother and not Tina? Just No. (actually, Mia didn't reach out to Tina at all throughout this whole book. Tina, as usual, had to do the job.)
Boris is a superstar. Just No.
Olivia. Ok, she was actually kind of great. Which makes it worse, because this entire book felt so weak and… unnecessary. Not that books should be ~necessary~, per say, but I feel like the 15 year anniversary of the Princess Diaries books would be much better if she had released a novella telling the story of Mia getting engaged and a bit of a cliffhanger about her having a secret sister. Then all of the rest of the things that happened in this book could happen in the course of Olivia's series and in a much better written and handled way. (Not the horrible stuff, though, such as Lilly and Lars. Eugh, seriously, what was that??)
Anyway. Just felt like lazy writing. I was sad at first, then I got frustrated, then I got angry, and now I'm going back to being sad.
So. Yeah. No. Just No.

Mia's stories are where Meg Cabot's writing habits and quirks shine brightest, and adult Mia is a much more pleasant read than her teenage self. The annoying obsessions have mellowed and there's so much crazy plot going on here that it doesn't feel like she's blowing things wildly out of proportion. Grown-up Tina and Lilly are perfect-- rooted in their core traits from the early books, but matured beautifully. Cabot does a good job of making a new, vital story from a series we thought was all wrapped up and tying up enough for a satisfying ending if this is the only adult Mia novel she writes and leaving some paths to travel if she wants to pen a sequel.
I think this volume probably stands on its own, but I'm glad I dug out the YA stories to reread first to catch more details.

It's nice coming back to these characters after so many years.

idk why this book's tagged as YA bc it isnt at allll.

it's so nice to see what mia, her friends, and her loved ones have been up to. this book's hilarious not only bc of the things that happen, but also the way it's written. it's also got a lot of heart (the proposal scene and phillippe's plotline are particular highlights), and the characters are a blast, tho it's a lil concerning that i def relate more to mia's hypochondriac tendencies now. also admirable how meg cabot transitions the story so seamlessly from a classic YA series to this mature adult romp yet still maintains mia's signature voice. a fun and funny story abt family, doing one's best under the circumstances, and following one's heart that also adeptly incorporates important real-world issues.

A Princess Diary book written for adult readers... Without having read the teen Diaries, I was missing a lot of the back story, but I still enjoyed Mia's journey from fiancee to queen!

Somehow this ended up being my least favorite book which is disappointing. But it had too much going on that I think it should’ve been more than one book- or drop the Olivia plot entirely.

And on the topic of Olivia that could’ve been done really well had it been hinted and sprinkled in throughout the original series. But it was obviously a last minute decision to keep writing YA in this universe. (But tbh I would’ve read a Rocky spin off so whatever)

Speaking of Rocky - I will not stand for the injustice done upon my man Frank Gianni. I didn’t and won’t support the Helen Phillipe ship and I not happy she killed off Frank to make it happen. And is that a spoiler maybe but Frank does on page 2 and it’s obvious that was plot so

Made me so happy =)
