By virtue of its subject and vibe, a pleasant read and sufficiently unsettling for me to regret reading it at 3am, but that's just me. Couldn't sleep anyway, reading about creepy books that don't allow themselves to be gotten rid of is fine. The ending was, alas, a little corny and felt a lot like one of those "prepare for a sequel" endings in cheesy horror movies.

The fate of our witch was always known and still it is chilling to read, borderline unimaginable and yet exactly what happened to her and so many others after her. Part of me wants to visit the Orkney islands now. Part of me doesn't.

A perfect spooky season read, this book is inspired by the real historical event of Alison Balfour’s execution as a witch in 1594 in Orkney, Scotland. The author did a wonderful job building a compelling modern mystery/fantasy horror story around that dark foundation.
