I hate everyone, which is to say I loved this stupid book. God help me. This is the most unhelpful review in the history of reviews. I'll come back to it someday.

Unique plot, interesting characters, great writing! I'm not a huge Jesse Eisenberg fan, but he does a really good job narrating the story. Already started the second in the series.

This is my first Holly Black read, but certainly not my last. This story should be a movie!! Incredible dystopic world where there are people who are born with powers to "curse" others, whether it be to change their emotions or to cause their death. This world/story is filled with crime family legends and unforgettable characters. Here's hoping Ms. Cole can write fast so we can find out what happens next.

Cassel and his (seemingly) coffee loving self brings a nice sarcastic touch to the book. “Clever as the devil and twice as pretty.” - is quite accurate for that kid, he is smart and witting with a short temper, I like that about him.
The way Holly writes and adds the details is a nice complimentary to it too. As always her books are brilliantly and beautiful written. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book!

EDIT// On the reread... I agree with everything I wrote when I read this a decade ago. Enjoyed the audiobook narrator more than expected though.

I'm seriously conflicted about what review to give this book. On the one hand, I like Holly Black and I love the world she's created here - how she's woven the details of it into the story. The premise is interesting... but this book just didn't do anything for me. I was not involved in any of the characters, and I had guessed most of the mysteries by page 40, which meant a long trek through the rest of the slow book. It felt like nothing really happened, though they certainly did. And although I adore the idea of con men getting too involved in their own cons, it was an aspect of Cassel's character that never really felt attached to him. He kept telling me it was too much fun for him, but I didn't believe it. I really wish I had loved this book! I certainly didn't hate it, but it wasn't my favorite either.

4,5*

I really liked this story! It was like nothing I have ever read before!
The ''magic''system is really unique and well thought!

I also really loved how we were as confused as the main character all throughout the book!
The main character, Cassel, was really funny and a master of sarcasm wich I always love!
None of the characters were ''perfect'' people, they all had their flaws and twisted personnalities and it gave them a great depth.

It was my first Holly Black book and I have to say that she doesn't disapoint! The writing style is simply beautiful and litterally takes you somewhere else as you resd her words!

I will definitely pick up the sequel soon, that ending killed me!
