I like the overall story, but it’s so short and it feels like it over-explains the boring and under-explains the fun.

As I've mentioned previously in my reviews, I am trying to get more acquainted with the Classics. Charles Dickens, of course, was on my list of authors I needed to try. I decided to start with this book since it was shorter and I already knew the basic storyline.

I have watched many movies and plays that have done renditions of this classic novel. I think that's why I was able to really follow along with the story. I'm honestly not the biggest fan of his writing style after reading this one book so I don't plan to read more of his works at this moment.

I am glad, however, that I did push myself to read this! It was definitely interesting to see how different Christmas was back in the 1840s. Mind you, this is set in Great Britain instead of America (which is where I live). But even looking up Christmas traditions going on today over there, you can see how times have changed.

One thing crazy to me is that grocers were open on Christmas morning! I couldn't imagine going to buy food on Christmas day! Also, the focus wasn't on gifts, but of spending time with family and eating a nice dinner.

Obviously, genre is Classic. It's appropriate for any age. Definitely worth reading at least once! Although, I recommend having a dictionary on hand! Loa.

A quick and lovely read

If you’re looking to start reading Dickens, this feels like the perfect place to start. It’s also nice that I finally read the base text that so many adaptations are built upon.

A classic, just read it already

A classic! I've read this many times, but each time I do, I fall in love with it all over again. Dickens' humor & language endure & touch hearts across the centuries.

English Review Below.

This is my first actual reading of Charles Dickens, and I think it's the perfect start for him. Because his writing style is peculiar, and it's easier to get accustomed to it in a short book, instead of getting into one of his tomes. His writing style isn't the easiest to me, but once you get into it, it gets going.

I have seen the animated film many years ago, but I remember the main gist of the story when Scrooge, who is a cheap, bitter, old man who cares only for stashing his money away is visited by the ghost of his former colleague, and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, to teach him a lesson and change his ways and become a better man to those around him and those who need him. I liked that we got to know some of Scrooge's backstory, and the story of Tiny Tim affected me a lot. The end was too optimistic, but I think that was the purpose of the story at the time it was written.

I enjoyed it, and I hope I find the same enjoyment in his big tomes when I get to reading them.

2022: read aloud again! Skipped the muppets this year

2019: read aloud with L&C (and then we watched the Muppets

It’s hard to imagine reading anything that more conveys the essence of Christmas than this short volume. The language and imagery are faultless.

UPDATE: Just listened to Hugh Grants read the same title, but not sure how I can record this as a separate book. Since it also gets 5 stars, not much to say, other than High Grants delivers an excellent performance, and contributing an interesting range of voices, none of which were distracting.

I’ve read this a few times and watched maybe 10 different adaptations. Nothing is better than the original! Dickens crams so much teaching, melodrama, and beautiful language in such a short novella. I read it this time around to my kids and they liked it, too. A classic.
