This was a really sweet book that tried to tackle some really difficult subjects. In my opinion this book did a pretty good job of succeeding in that goal. I enjoyed the switches between dates as well. I find that that trope is not always easy to pull off but I thing Leasi did it beautifully.
I would definitely recommend this book to any kid who loves history or tales of kids standing strong in what they believe in.

Excellent, nuanced story about a boy’s search to learn more about queer people in history at the same time he’s trying to navigate a friendship that could be more, if not for homophobic interference. The novel has an interesting structure, alternating chapters that are letters to a historical figure and in-the-moment chapters depicting the day where everything comes to a head. Amos is an appealing character, vulnerable with his emotions, curious about history, and always open to learning more about how to be inclusive and an ally. Highly recommended.

This is a definite must read for probably 6th grade and up. I love how it weaved LGBTQ+ historical figures within the fictional journey of one boy's first love. Well researched and tenderly told, this book will help so many young and old gain self awareness and education about others that they may not have thought of before due to the simple fact they weren't like them.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
