I took forever to get through the first 20% of the book because I felt like nothing was happening. Then boom, around page 100 it got un-put-downable.
Still loving this series for the magic system and the familiar teens learning magic and saving the world setup mixed with the less familiar (to me) Nigerian context. Honestly, what nerd doesn't love the idea of a world where money falls from the sky to reward you for learning?
Our main character is Nigerian, born and partly raised in the US, and one of our supporting characters is American living in Nigeria. So you get things sprinkled in like conversations where these characters generalize - theorize? philosophize? - about Black America, written by an author born in America to Nigerian immigrant parents. The Nigerian/American culture stuff doesn't distract from the story, it feels natural. It's just not the sort of thing you see in most American YA fantasy, and the worldview here is one of the things that makes going back to SFF's typical settings after this seem kinda boring.
Sadly, I can't find an expected publication date yet for a third one. Sigh.

Stunning! I couldn’t set the book down and read it in two days. It’s quite different from the first volume. This story is really all about Sunny, so her friends and family seem like supporting characters. Most of the events are seen from Sunny’s perspective; it really feels like following the story from within Sunny’s mind. It would be great if there was a third volume!

Edit: After reading it for the second time, I increased the rating to 5 stars. Sunny’s story has become very dear to me and I was so glad to read this in preparation of diving into the third volume that’s now out!!!

Second edit: Based on the third reading, I decreased the rating to 4 stars. Perhaps it would be better to just re-read the highlighted quotes and the finale.

This was the 2018 Locus YA winner.

I really enjoyed this second book in the series. There is apparently a third book, [b:Akata Woman|57841497|Akata Woman (Akata Witch, #3)|Nnedi Okorafor|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|90613235].

This book had some good scenes, but it suffered from "second book" syndrome. There was definitely a feeling this was a set up for a third book. I do not fear spiders so this book was not particularly scary to me.
