Meh.

Loveable characters: Complicated

Loved this book, it’s full of drama and mystery. It was hard to put down. Deducted one star because some of the descriptions can become tiresome.

Ok, it was a little on the juvenile side and it’s not the type of thing that’s going to blow your mind. But I really enjoyed it. I loved the writing the atmosphere and the characters. Dodgy ending but what the hell. Institute legal proceedings against me if you must.

Not her best work. It was clear from the get go who the real villain was because he was so clearly marked. Having a character's outward appearance reflect their villainy always strikes me as extremely lazy writing and it was a shame that du Maurier was not more inventive. Mary was a pretty feisty heroine, but I loathed the insta-love she felt for Jem. The ending felt unsatisfying because Mary just puts aside her own plans and decides she's going to run off with Jem, even though he's treated her with nothing but disdain. I think du Maurier might have been drawing a parallel between Mary and her aunt Patience (who displayed so little agency that she may as well not have been in the book) by having her repeat her aunt's mistake vis a vis a Merlyn man, but it still felt uninspired.

Magníficos ambientes, una buena trama y un último capítulo que ojalá no hubiera escrito.

Maurier is a master of her craft whose haunting prose and storytelling remains unmatched. Much like Mary Yellan, I feared Jamaica Inn and was thankful when the story ended so I could leave that terrible place behind.
