Ohhh the shenanigans. Jamaica Inn starts off all dark and atmospheric and has you at the edge of your seat just DYING to know the mystery!!! Then it devolves into a thrilling (and oh so dark) sequence of events with all sorts of degenerates and criminals lurking around doing all sorts of terrible horrific things. Mary, our dear heroine, thinks herself to be witty and bright, and proceeded to make terrible decisions every 5 seconds while acting extremely dramatic. I think a lot of people read this as a dark gothic tale, and it is! But dear Lord I could not take Mary the least bit seriously, which made it more of a comical adventure book with fun twists and turns that all gets tied up in a neat little bow.

Jamaica Inn is my fourth Daphne Du Maurier novel and just like the others, it did not disappoint! I loved the sort of mystery aspect of this and I found myself having no idea how the plot was going to progress.
There was constant action and I loved that Mary didn't wait for someone to come and save her - she had her own plan (even if it didn't work out!). I had my suspicions about the Vicar but the novel made me doubt myself near the end!
This was the last novel by Daphne Du Maurier that I have on my shelf so I can't wait to pick up another!

This was less subtle than her other books, and there was also a bit of "she was a woman and that's why she felt that way/did that thing", however I did still enjoy it for the most part

Not as gripping as Rebecca, and I felt I should have been more scandalised, and more impressed by the main character who was brave and sensible, but not that exciting. Having said all that, DuMaurier is an incredible writer and even if this book had been boring, which it wasn't, I think I would have still enjoyed her prose.
