Never thought this book would bring me to tears, but it did. Reading about how the shooting at a showing of Trainwreck impacted Amy and made her get involved in gun safety (a cause I'm involved in as well) completely left me crying. I enjoyed this book and getting to know a bit more about her and her life. Don't go into this book thinking it is a laugh on every page - it isn't. But it is a good read with laughs, and in my case at least, so tears. Would recommend.

Hilarious in most parts and tragically realistic in others.

I happen to like Amy Schumer. I like her no care attitude, her body positivity and her humor. All of that was in this book, and more. She touched on some more serious topics and it was great to here these parts of her life that we do not always see when she is cracking jokes on stage. I definitely recommend this books to fans of hers, anyone who saw her stand-up or watched her movie. You need to know a little bit about her to understand the context and to be interested in her life story.

What a surprise! I have a brand new respect and love for Amy Schumer. I'd definitely recommend listening to her audiobook instead of reading.

3.5-4 stars.

This was better than I expected it to be. If we weren't reading it for book club, I would've never picked it up, as Amy Schumer is generally funny but sometimes her shtick is a bit crass for me. I really have to enjoy a celebrity a LOT to want to pick up their autobiography.

There's a lot more depth to the book than I anticipated. This is not just a light read with joke after joke and scattered essays. Yes, there are funny moments and you can definitely 'hear' Amy's voice in the writing, but she does delve into some low points in her life, some deep moments and sad times, and I appreciated that. I enjoyed the laid-back layout of the book, the meandering through different points in her life, and especially the journal entries with footnotes. This made me look at her in a new light (in a good way).

I know in my heart of hearts that I could never be Amy's friend because she's super white! However this book bridged the similarities we have as women. As young women and funny women, and even women who experienced shit we never thought we would. I know people give her a lot of shit but I feel like part of it could be that jealous man backlash from seeing her succeed. This won't give you the vibe that you think Amy is crazier at all either. It humbles her.

There was an enormous amount of this memoir that I really enjoyed - in particular Schumer does an exceptional job of giving insight into herself as a teen and young adult, you feel as if you really know and understand who she was. She also shows a level of vulnerability and apparent candour that is nice to see. There are places where she lapses back into a patter about men and women that feels as if it belows in a club act (and vaginas - I love female comedians but really, I don't want to hear about what your vagina smells like any more than I want to hear about your male counterparts' genitals smell like which is zero). And there are some chapters in which the female empowerment/inspiration/learned a valuable lesson feels tacked on. But I liked this a whole lot. And it made me think that were I to meet her, I would like Amy Schumer a whole lot (which is kind of the point of these memoirs).

I started this book back in 2017 and finished it in 2022. Not anything to do with the book… I used to be really good at not finishing books, and I’ve been working on reading my unread shelf. Anyways, not that that matters. I love Amy Schumer. She is funny as hell, but I actually really love the serious Amy Schumer. She is powerful.
