I'm sorry but- that ending???

I don't know how to process it. What an incredible read!

2025 I may actually review books.

This book should really be 2.5 stars. Meh plot/character and meh writing (not implying I could do better). The characters needed clearer motivations for their actions. I understand that to keep you guessing the author held back most of the character histories, but I thought it was a cheap plot device. The writing is repetitive.

If you want a great Victorian Egyptian romp, stick with Amelia Peabody.

Absolutely loved the concept, romance and research that went into this book! My only complaint is the pacing was a little all over the place, and there was an unfortunate slog in the middle.
adventurous lighthearted

Really fun story, lots of twists and turns. I’m realizing I love a good story set in Egypt. Absolutely adored the narrator of the audiobook. The only qualm I had was pacing- there were a lot of moments spaced out through the books that felt like climactic moments, but after so many of these I felt emotionally exhausted (? This could be because I went through it too fast though). The ending was great and I’m excited for the sequel!

Woah I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did but I couldn’t stop reading.

Magical artefacts, ancient Egypt and betrayal - what more could you want? I actually didn’t see the plot twists coming and I’m so thankful for that.. I’m so disappointed when the plot is easily guessed.

My only issues with this book is that I wanted to see more magical artifices actually used… considering it’s an important part of the world there’s only a handful actually used.. Also the main character was absolutely insufferable 90% of the time. All she did was run headfirst into danger at every available opportunity and then cried about it afterwards, thankfully the story carried the slack from her incredibly irratating personality.

Delightful mystery with lots of historical details. Excited to read the second installment.
