i enjoyed this graphic novel very much!! very happy to finally read it after looking forward to it when it was announced :) i’m definitely going to look back at it a lot for illustration inspiration!
A pretty simple (but great) premise flawlessly executed I think. The mastery is not only in the artwork and how it propels the story along and sets the tone, but also in the writing and the overall tone it creates, which is perfectly balanced. It's upbeat, but deals with serious subject matter. It's quite wholesome, but kind of has an edge to it. It's fast paced but also meditative. It's not too heavy handed. If the story took itself more seriously, it wouldn't work. Ultimately, it's a cute romance, it's not sappy or cringey, but it is heartwarming. If I reflected further, I would no doubt be able to find fault with the story. But I think it's excellent!

love the art, the characters' facial expressions, the outfits, the monochrome/colours!
but i felt like something was missing from the story.ella's motivation for stealing is missing, and i wish we could get more flashbacks of madeleine's experiences and people's reactions. yes, we got the dialogue/comments that people made in the past, but i wanted to see those moments. also madeleine gave me mean girl vibes??? i wish we got more info on why she seemed snarky, aside from her rebelling against her parents' wish for her to be this perfect, polite daughter.
but i felt like something was missing from the story.
I loved the character development in this story! The illustrations were beautiful and it had the perfect blend of lightheartedness, warmth, and humor.
