I really enjoyed this one. Part of what made it interesting was learning more about Almanzo. I like how events in this book echoed events in Farmer Boy.

I have always loved this book as it definitely helps me to appreciate life and modern conveniences! Love that Hux wrote his book report on the book and said he thought it was a girl’s book but plenty of action and learning for all.

I know I must have read this before, but it was probably 50 years ago. Coming to it now, I was amazed by LIW's personification of the snow. It's a malevolent force that Laura imagines is coming after her family with evil intent. As the long, long winter goes on with blizzard after blizzard, the family starts to become listless, silent, exhausted - in fact, seriously depressed. Despite this, it's a great survival story filled with exhilarating scenes of snow-covered prairie. And Mary is only obnoxiously pious one time.

This book reminded me of a horror novel, from the early pages when Pa starts to see signs of a devastating winter through the seemingly endless cycle of blizzards that halted the trains.

This fictional account of the Ingalls family living through a snowbound winter in the Dakota Territory was fascinating but also terrifying. As with most of the Little House books, I wish I had read this one as a child, when I would have seen this as a wonderful, wintery adventure. As an adult, all I can see are the perils on every page!

Just because you torture the characters, doesn't mean you have to torture the readers. This book was as endless as its winter. Just the details were interesting. And certainly reading page after page of the Ingalls Family coping with slowly freezing and starving was interesting for awhile. But it would have been nice to get a better idea of the people themselves and this book was all plot and a pretty simple one at that.

This is one of my top three of the Little House books. It’s quite frightening to think about how long the “long winter” lasted with everyone in De Smet practically starving before the snow melted and the trains brought groceries.
Definitely an in-depth look at some hard times.
