This has been my favourite book of the Little House series since I first read it as a kid. Now that the snow is falling outside I had a need to read it again, and it is still great. Now matter how terrible the winter gets up here in Canada, at least it's not as bad as it was in the 19th century prairies.
Reread June 2020: I'm just loving revisiting the Ingalls family again. Nothing beats the emotional connection I have to this series. Reading this book felt like going home. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I'm slowly but surely making my way through the Little House series and this book definitely lived up to its name! That winter was long, baby! I'm a Florida girl and I haven't seen snow in 20 years. I couldn't relate to the debilitating snow surrounding Laura, but it felt very immersive. I love this little family and how our lil lady has grown throughout the books. She has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders and she's doing wonderfully. I'm so eager for her and Alamanzo to start courting. She's still a little too young, but I think they'll be a great match. I would like to watch the show soon and find comparisons. I don't want this series to end, but I am happy with the direction it is headed. Tally ho, Pa!

still a favorite book of mine, and likely favorite probably of the whole series.
Nevertheless I wish there were a foreward or something to address the harmful indigenous tropes and portrayals. This book has them as much as the others (although not quite as egregious of House on the Prarie or Silver Lake.. but still).
Still, though, to me this is a good read nonetheless. I love the story of resilience and hardship and family.

So interesting to read this while summer was coming, and think about what the blizzards were like while temps are rising here. When the train finally made it through in the spring and the family got food just as they ran out, my 7 year old son was cheering and nearly crying in jubilation.
We loved this one like the others. It was exciting to hear how they survived. We listened to it.

Not my favorite of the little house books, but the struggle to survive is riveting. Whether it was her daughter, or Laura that wrote these, whomever it was the descriptions of the storms and the monotony of survival are perfect. Norah was almost giddy with happiness that Spring had finally arrived. She's so into this series.
