Not my favorite of the little house books, but the struggle to survive is riveting. Whether it was her daughter, or Laura that wrote these, whomever it was the descriptions of the storms and the monotony of survival are perfect. Norah was almost giddy with happiness that Spring had finally arrived. She's so into this series.

Wow. I could almost feel the cold and hunger while reading this. Very vivid depiction of the life of a town of settlers who barely make it through a harsh winter on only the supplies they were able to grow or buy before blizzards cut them off from all outside contact.
medium-paced

Laura and her family are trapped in their town by a succession of blizzards, and the food is rapidly running out. Laura does an excellent job of capturing both the claustrophobic despair of their situation and the never-say-die outlook of her family.

This is maybe my favorite in the series, so far. A family's brutal struggle for survival.
We get another look at Laura's future husband Almonzo Wilder. The first 3/4 of the story raises some questions about his character but he emerges as shrewd, canny and heroic.
The ending was slightly unsatisfying. The story could use a few plot twists or something, but, yeah, it is a children's book.

Ever since I started re-reading my Little House Books I have realized that Laura and her family's life wasn't as rosy as I remembered from childhood. Case in point The Long Winter. They are basically snowed in for 7 months with little to no supplies. As a child it was exciting to read about the crazy snow storms that the Ingalls family lived through, not having to go to school because they couldn't even see across the street when they looked through the window. Ma's showed what a true "Pioneer" she was when she made the button lamp when supplies got low.

Re-reading this as a grownup however, I realized that not only would I stand no chance if I happened to live in a town that was basically on its own for 7 months of winter without any new supplies coming in. I also realized how very close the Ingalls family came to actually starving during the Long Winter.

I read this in a blanket cave last night because I was feeling the winter misery. It hit the spot EXCEPT damn Ma was racist AF. These books are a huge reason I got into reading as a kid so I will always love them BUT ALSO, yikes.

Despite the adorable cover, this is the one where the Ingalls family almost all starves to death. Strangely entertaining anyway mostly because of the number of times the almost die walking around in blizzards.
