I got to page 90 and the title character still hadn't shown up. Instead there was a bunch of rambling gibberish about weird things like neon monks. Back to the library you go.

I didn't "really like it" until the end - which is why I'm always so torn about not finishing books, because I've read so many that gain an extra 1-2 stars from me upon my reading of the last few chapters. The pacing is pretty slow, but the book wasn't too long for that to make me dislike it - plus then we get time for the hilarious, dry, witty sidebars in Adams' narration. (I mean straight off the bat, first page, you get the genius and hilarious idea of an Electric Monk - and a faulty one at that - which seems completely random until very near the end, at which point I had nearly forgot about them).

Admittedly, I didn't feel an urge to read to find out what happens until the last fifth, maybe sixth, of the book - but that's because everything seems so NOT interconnected up until that point that one doesn't even know what questions to ask that might be answered by further reading.

On a slightly unrelated note: the only copy of this book I was able to find was the tv adaptation cover, which is so annoying, because though I remember loving the series when I watched it, it is SO different from the book and I loathe adaptation covers in general.

One more note: I was recently trying to get into audiobooks (didn't have much luck, I think I'll stop trying) and before reading this listened to the abridged audiobook narrated by Adams. Adams' narration is great (I was given advice to listen to audiobooks narrated by their authors), but I hadn't realized it was abridged until I got to the end and was left wondering
Spoiler"why is Dirk issuing a bill of no charge for saving the human race from total extinction? When did that happen?"
Do yourself a favor: just read the book.

The electric monk hit a little too close to home

This was a lot of fun! I really enjoy Douglas Adams quirky storylines, characters and the wild adventure that inevitably unfolds.

Maybe 2.5 stars?

It's possible I just wasn't in the mood for absurdist slice of life but this wasn't as good as hitchhiker's. This felt more...weird & less enjoyable to me.
