this was so great as an audiobook, the narrators were phenomenal!

I had seen mixed reviews about this book, so I wasn’t sure what to expect but my goodness I am sooo glad I read (listened to) it for myself! I LOVED Kiki & Malakai so much! First off, the narrator killed it. I felt like I was watching a Black, Brit drama on Netflix (the book definitely addresses the experiences of the African diaspora in Europe).

Secondly, this story had all the elements I love in new adult/college love story. Kiki is a driven, brilliant, dramatic, hilarious feminist who is guarded with her feelings. She meets her match in Malakai- who is charming, reflective and just as witty as her, and yet he is still very much a young guy in his 20s who is making mistakes and navigating family trauma. I adored the scenes with them together! While they are both scared to love for different reasons- their “fake dating “+ friendship lead to vulnerable moments that make falling in love inevitable.

The final scene before the epilogue = chef’s 💋. They are both such a beautiful mess and so worthy of love. Their best friends were great supporting cast. Lastly, I loved the Nigerian culture and jokes represented. The dialogue had me grinning and laughing so much while reading this story! (Now, I am nervous now to read Sweet Heat, I don’t want to see Kiki & Malakai go through hardship lol.)

Best mainstream book I’ve listened  to this quarter, maybe even the year. I didn’t expect to be as invested in the story as I was. I also, didn’t expect to want a couple to work so badly.

The beauty of this is its not just Kiki and Kai’s story. Their friends are all meandering around the love maze trying to figure out whether or not to take the risk with whomever they’re interested in.

Kiki is the pilot of the ship, giving out advice, while Malakai is the navigator, gathering intel and charting the course that will inspire others to jump into love’s ever flowing seas.

No spoilers here. You have to experience this one for yourself.

might've liked this in a different format  it just didn't call to me, fun but a little too current with social media slang for me
