3.75⭐️ The cover is so misleading and even the description doesn’t give the full scope of the suspense of the story. Angie has a guide business in Montana that she inherited from her father, but the business is struggling. She blames a lot of that struggle on Dare, who returned home from active duty and opened his own guide business. As Angie has to start making tough choices about her future, she has one last guide with two guys scheduled for a bear hunt.

Her fathers best friend has an uneasy feeling about the hunt and asks Dare to check in on her. The two guys she is leading have a very tense relationship and one is not happy about the accommodations. Plus, little do they all know that there is a black bear lurking in the area and already has a taste for blood.

I enjoyed the suspense plot, the bear, the descriptions of the wilderness and the details of being a guide. I liked both main characters and thought Dare's character in particular was humorous. I even liked the romance, what there was of it!

And that's the problem in a nutshell. The story is good, but with more fleshing out and a some layering of the plot lines, it could have been great. It had all the bone structure for a great Linda Howard book. It just needed more meat.

Still, it was fun and I don't regret spending time on it.

It wasn't anything great, but it is an okay book. Angie annoyed me a bit though.

For some reason I really love the first chapter of this book. Angie is introduced sitting in a realtors office, signing a contract to sell the property she grew up in. Her business as a wilderness guide fell on very hard times after Dare Callahan opened up a competing business in the same area. Desperate for business she has accepted a job guiding two men into the mountains on a bear hunt, but the men are not what they claim to be.

After the very good beginning the book settled into a very slow, sometimes plodding setup. To be honest, I found the wordiness of the book a little painful at times. I don't think you need to spend half a chapter describing a situation that isn't integral to the story, but overall I enjoyed the book and I'm glad I read it.

I decided I'd like to take a short break after reading the 3rd Outlander book.

I picked up this Linda Howard because I like her books.

This one sucked. Dare is cool, Angie is fine, but Chad. Oh god, Chad. And the bear.

I just couldn't, you guys. I finished it because I felt I had to, but man, I'm going back to Outlander.

2/5 stars, go read Mr. Perfect instead.

I really loved this book. It made me laugh out loud and the relationship felt so genuine and real between the main characters. Big fan of Linda Howard!
