Not the Witch You Wed

I'm a huge paranormal romance fan and I'm always willing to give authors a try when they dive into a new sub-genre. This was actually my first read by April and I couldn't wait to dive in.

I loved that this was going to be a witch and wolf shifter romance, I'm a fan of both of those elements in my PNR reads. And I love fated mates, which I'll get to in my review.

For the most part, I liked the tropes in this book except for one, which was the fake dating trope. This trope is definitely on the rise in the romance genre, but it's one of my least favorite. Yet I've been reading them more than normal, I'm definitely willing to give it a try.

But the other tropes were second chance, a dash of enemies to lovers and lastly, friends to lovers. Those are solid tropes I enjoyed and my favorite parts of Violet and Lincoln's story.

When it comes to shifter romance and fated mates, I'm very specific about how I like my reads to be. And it wasn't working for me in Not the Witch You Wed, however, it may not bother everyone. I love the element of insta-love when it comes to fated mates, it's probably the only time I like the insta-love trope. There were all the signs that they were meant to be together, but didn't recognize it.

So yeah, this was an okay read for me. There were a lot of characters mentioned and we're in deep into the politics of their paranormal world. It felt like a little bit too much for me. And there was also a little dig about paranormal romances, I'm sure it was a joke, but meh, didn't work for me.

I might give the rest of this series a try because it definitely sounds like there will be more. I think this book will absolutely work for those that are new to paranormal romance!

Tropes: marriage of convenience, fake dating, halloween / paranormal romance

The fake dating trope is a classic and is always such a fun story to watch unfold.
Violet Maxwell is a witch. A witch with no magic! After wolf shifter Lincoln Thorne broke her heart she wrote him off for good. That is until the two of them are reunited by the arcane Supernatural Laws to find significant others. They agree to fake date one another to buy themselves some time, which of course opens up situations for those old feelings to start making reappearances. Plus, Violet's magic decides to start becoming active causing even more chaos. The duo navigate supernatural politics, prejudices, and plotting for control, they start realizing that they make a better team for progress together. There is definitely some heat in this book. The supporting characters and Violet's sisters (they are triplets) really add depth and humor to the book and I can't wait to read the next one in the series, little sister Rose and demon vet. I can't miss that!

I really wanted to love this book, but I just never got hooked. I have only read a few "witchy" books and the ones I love the most tend to have only a few mystical elements while this one was chock full of them. I think this may be a mood read book for me and I just wasn't quite there. I may try picking this book up again near Halloween and see how that goes. There were a lot of fun references sprinkled throughout the book, that I think will amuse readers. Have fun finding them!

3.5 star listen I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a good job.
I enjoyed the story and characters. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Definitely not what I was expecting. Teeters on the line of romcom and paranormal. There wasn’t a big action fight in the third act, it was a third act breakbeat like a rom com. The MMC was a wolf shifter, never read about shifters so that was interesting. But the relationship was sweet and true mates. I’m glad he was able to tell her the reason for never showing up after high school graduation to run away together. His dad was a jack ass, worst human ever. But Linc saved her by giving his dad complete submission. Loved at the end that they helped each other while each in court not knowing how their relationship was going to continue.

A really cute second chance romance with a paranormal twist!

Bonus points that the MMC's name is Lincoln (my dog is named Lincoln) and he's a wolf shifter that is a total cinnamon roll.

Violet the FMC is pretty bad ass as well. All the cutesy language and witchy swearing were endearing.

The overuse of "inner wolf" less so, but regardless, it was still delightful and adorable and super cute.

Minimal spice but it is open door.
