My second Jane Austen read - a witty novel with interesting, sometimes absurd, characters. Enjoyed much of the commentary about gender, especially the conversation between Anne and Captain Harville near the end. The story's pacing was a little off in my opinion, with a steady pace to begin with, followed by a lull, and then what felt like a rushed ending, but Austen does ultimately tie everything up (rather conveniently, I might add). Anne and Wentworth are both wonderfully written, and I enjoy the way they are juxtaposed against the ridiculousness of the Elliot family. Definitely a story that makes your heart ache - Anne is discarded, ignored, often ill-used by her family, and you just want to see her happy. She is gentle, intelligent, and kind, but so is Wentworth. I wish we could see more of them together at the end.

This book has moments of heartbreaking prose that I just had to reread a couple of times. This story is more blunt than Pride and Prejudice (the other Jane Austen I have read) which carries its own charm.

She didn’t bloom all at once.
Anne Elliot endured quietly, gently, faithfully until love returned and remembered her name.
Unlike Austen’s earlier springtime heroines, Anne walks through rustling leaves and cool winds, a woman in her autumn.
Persuasion is for those who feel forgotten.
A reminder that tenderness is not weakness, and second chances may come not with fireworks… but with a letter.
Ideal for reading with a blanket, a candle… and the ache of autumn in your chest.
