Please give me more Tod. And Mrs. Hudson. And Kaylee’s father and uncle parenting their daughters together.

idek how but in the year and a half since my soul was completely destroyed when the last book came out I managed to forget just how much I hated Nash and also just how much I adored Tod, something i've only realised by rereading the first one. What a time for me to be alive and rereading the rest of the series for sarcastic dead boys who will forever make me cry (someone pass me a tissue right now)

I enjoyed the premise of the novel and it was an interesting take on a mythical creature. I had to say though that the plot was a little (ok a lot..) predictable and it didn't really have me that intrigued. I enjoyed the characters though and you could see that the novel was opening up a paranormal world that could produce many more novels.

I thought the romance in the novel was only so-so and would have actually preferred the book if it was more about the paranormal but I understand that the romance paranormal genre is what young adults are currently devouring. Overall I though the book was enjoyable but not a must read.

Originally on From Book to Hooked.

One of the things that first drew me toward this book was the idea of bean sidhes, or banshees as they are more commonly known. I was really curious to see how someone could make an interesting story out of women in long, flowing dresses who scream for the dead. However, much like Kaylee, I learned that the lore we know is wrong.

When Kaylee senses that someone near her is going to die she must scream for the soul. A lot of the time, she can't even control her scream. That is without Nash around. I found it really interesting that in this world Rachel Vincent created, there are also male bean sidhes. I loved Nash with Kaylee. He was such a perfect counterpart. Emma was also a great character. She was kind of a polar opposite to Kaylee, but their friendship is amazing. I mean, we all need a friend, and Emma played that role perfectly. Tod was a great character. He added a lot of humor to the story, and introduced us to another side of the Netherworld. I can't wait to get to know him better in future books.

The other side characters, like Brendan, Val, and Sophie were great, too. But that ending? I didn't see that coming. So overall, the idea for this series was amazing, I loved the characters, and it was very well written! I'm really excited for the next read! I'm definitely HOOKED!

I thought it started off a little slow and boring, but towards the middle it picked up and got more interesting and I ended up liking it :)

I really liked this book because it was unique in the fact it brought in the supernatural, but not in the way I expected. It brought in different creatures and a different storyline that I really liked. It was unique in that it wasn't filled with vampires or werewolves. I can't wait to read the next one.

This book was so poorly written I couldn't finish it! I'm so sorry for those fans who loved it, but I could not enjoy it! The story moved to fast, there was no back ground to anything!

I’ve had this series on my radar since high school and wanted to read it despite the fact that it’s young-adult paranormal romance that is marketed as “for fans of Twilight”. Kaylee doesn't see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. When that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school, but a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. When classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who will be next. I found the romance between Kaylee and Nash to be very juvenile and based in the insta-love trope, but it also fit the young-adult paranormal romance genre and I did like them both as individual characters. There were some typical young-adult paranormal romance tropes, but I liked the world-building and mythology of these supernatural characters. The secondary characters were interesting and I’d like to learn more about them in future books in the series. I’m sure that the author will set up a love triangle between three characters in future books. The writing style is very simple/easy and accessible for a younger audience. The main storyline of the first book isn’t the most complex or interesting but it does a good job at setting up the foundations for the characters, the world and the rest of the book series. Even after only reading the first book, I can already tell that this book series would make a great teen supernatural show. I recommend this book for fans of young-adult paranormal romance.

Re-reading in 2022 and wow. It's weird because I still really liked the story, but I definitely see my age influencing my opinions of characters. Still enjoyable, only taking 1 star off because based on my previous review below, I probably shouldn't have given it 4 stars to begin with.

I absolutely loved the premise of this book. I honestly didn't expect the plot to go in the direction it did.

So, to start, I love the murder mystery feel it gives. Who's killing these girls? What did Kaylee's uncle mean by "living on borrowed time"? What the heck is a bean sidhe? Let me tell you right now, I am not pronouncing it correctly at all.

The characters are unique and mysterious in a way, and the use of comedic relief is perfect. I absolutely love Tod, and I really hope he is in the sequel because he's just fabulous. He's sarcastic and annoying, but he's also intense and you can already tell that he likes Kaylee which is awesome because I'm always up for a love triangle that makes me want to tear my heart in two.

Nash is actually not my favorite. I think he is kind of needy, in a very subtle way.

Kaylee is great, but she needs to give her father some credit. The way she disobeys him and continues to get involved in reaper business is not okay. I don't like her attitude.

Overall, I really did enjoy this book, and I'm hoping that the rest of the series is just as enjoyable.
