Beautiful

So close but did not finish. It was an airplane read and after I didn’t finish on the plane I just couldn’t get back into it. There are some really great lines (philosophical in the way The Alchemist blew me away) but overall it’s kind of a miss for me! I thought it was a satire at first lol

Promising start and cute ending. But Karla is just a pain in the ass and I cannot read that well when I’m rolling my eyes all the time

I'm struggling with this review.

I kept wanting the book to drop knowledge nuggets or get to a point of something. And it didn't.

The stories of the side "characters" were fascinating, but the main story of Paulo and Karla bored me more than I thought it would.... and then abruptly stopped.

This felt more like a really long letter to the past rather than what I have come to expect from Paulo Coehlo. I am disappointed and let down. And even more confused about where this came from and why this book was published.

I loved the Alchemist as much as the rest, but I love this book more. I’ve never resonated with an author like I do Paulo Coelho and this book is no exception. This story is real, and as an avid traveler I couldn’t relate more.

Though not at all literally similar, this book brought back many memories of my own travels in my early 20’s.

"Hippie" primarily centers on the relationship between Paulo and Karla, and is mostly told from their point of view, though it frequently splits off into the stories and backgrounds of the other travelers. Though this is not my favorite narrative style, I enjoyed learning about the other characters' experiences, and the events that prompted them to join the journey of the Magic Bus. As with other books by Paulo Coelho such as "The Alchemist," the focus of this story is on, not just a physical journey, but a spiritual one as well. I enjoyed the book, but I did feel that the ending could have been more developed. There seems to be a lot that happens internally with Paulo and Karla in the final chapters, but the reader is left to imply quite a bit, and I was left feeling like I had missed important moments in the story. Overall a nice story, it just didn't provide as much satisfaction as other Paulo Coelho books that I have read.

First To Read

An odd book, to be sure. I hadn't read any Coelho since The Witch of Portobello about six years ago so I had forgotten his writing style. Whereas his other works tend to be more mystical, Hippie was autobiographical, an account of his two-month journey through Europe and Asia during the early 70s. The writing was okay but the story fell flat. Although Paulo and his love interest, Karla, are the focus of the story, Coelho also gives backstory to a handful of other characters. The problem, in the end, is that there is nothing that brings these people together other than the bus ride. Perhaps that's the point, that sometimes we just happen to end up at the same time and place with no cosmic connection. However, if that was the moral of the story, why write 280 pages to get us to that conclusion? In the end, Coelho leaves the reader much like his main character: dissatisfied and wanting something more.

I don’t know where to start on how much I disliked this book. Just bad writing, really boring.
