I kind of really liked this one even though i thought i wasn't going to. These kinds of stories are so important too.
The idealisation of dysfunctional relationships, being stuck in toxic cycles, feeling yourself be a worse version of yourself with them, musings on the nature of love when you're that young and naive- it all hit a bit close to home. I kind of wish Laura as a character was fleshed out further instead of remaining enigmatic, charismatic and selfish till the very end. But I can also see the argument that that wasn't required since it was Frederica's story first and foremost. I wish she and Doodle hadn't gotten together at the end though. It felt like a pretty cheesy way to end a story that I thought was otherwise pretty mature and self aware about how things usually go.
The queer friendgroup and workplace in this book felt so homely and comforting.
And my goodness, the art-it was so so stunning. I was softly gasping in wonder at every page.

this is for all my baddies of color who have had their lives absolutely wrecked by a white demon.
This story really digs into how a relationship can be all consuming -- and how that all consuming might be ruining other aspects of your life.
Love the use of grey, black, white & pink to tell the story through images that support the text.

I think this book highlights a toxic/emotionally abusive relationship in a really palatable way. I wish we had more plot articulating the main characters shift. The illustrations are beautiful.

Very cute, and I loved the art. Liked this way more than I expected. I hadn’t even planned on reading it, but my interest was piqued by the amount of recognition it was getting. Definitely does a very good job normalizing LGBTQ+ identities. Stories about toxic LGBTQ+ relationships are a step in the right direction for normalizing it. And I would also be lying if I said I didn’t love a cast of major and minor characters being 99% LGBTQ+. It’s unusual and pleasant and refreshing.
