Loved the illustrations and style, but the plot sort of dragged for me. Freddy was frustratingly passive, and Laura Dean was so clearly a horrible person. I just couldn’t relate or believe in the characters and plot because it just seemed so obvious from the very start what Freddy should have done. But I can see the value that this book might bring to a teenage, high school reader.
What did I like - the quirkiness of the characters, especially the hobby that Doodle and Freddy shared of disassembling and reassembling body parts of toys. Themes of friendship. I also really liked the names in this book. Very memorable.
What I didn’t like - Freddy making dumb decisions over and over again. And the ending.. I like that Freddy eventually broke up with LD. That was predictable but had to happen. But I did not like that Doodles and her ended up in a romantic relationship?! If anything, it totally should have been with Vi, her “older” friend who she was becoming close with. I felt way more romantic chemistry there. Don’t get me wrong, I love Doodle and Freddy together .. but as best friends.

I picked just because I was feeling melancholy. It's the tale of a teenage romance that doesn't seem to be going well. Main character Freddy constantly gets distracted by her on again off again girlfriend Laura Dean negatively impacting her relationships with her friends and family. The artwork in this is visually beautiful definitely set in Southern California by the plants and colors that are used. I like that it's done in the format of Freddy emailing an advice columnist. I also like the fashion that is displayed in this. The only thing I truly didn't like was the character of Laura Dean who came across very selfish and was probably meant to.
I am on an lgbtqia+ book kick right now, and will likely continue down this kick for another few books. I am quite enjoying the non heteronormative romances, as most of my experience with that in my teens and early twenties were fanfic. It's nice to see it in more mainstream fiction these days.

Fave Line: “ What does your love with this person offer you? Does it make you happy? Does it give you what you need to be a better person?”
Genre: YA Romance / Graphic Novel
Rating:
2.5/5 ⭐️s
This book was really disappointing for me. Throughout the entire story the protagonist is being jerked around by her girlfriend. It isn’t until the very end that she finally realize didn’t have to put up with what she is. I wish she would’ve had this realization closer to the middle of the story because it just felt like it dragged on. Not only was she being pulled around but she was a crappy friend.
