I’m still getting used to Marino Tamaki’s slower pace of story-telling, but I truly adore this book. I loved the message of finding relationships that serve you well and bring out the best in you, romantic or otherwise. So lovely. And the art is gorgeous and amazing (although I’m very biased as Rosemary is a childhood friend of mine, but I think I’d love the art regardless). The color palette is precious and romantic.

Loved this! The artstyle is awesome and I love the use of colour.

Read it in one sitting. I think this was a great look into the woes of teenage lesbian relationships, and teenage friendships. Made me very happy :)

I really enjoyed the subtle and gentle way the author explored the difficult topics it contained. Tamaki depicted the realities of many emotionally abusive relationships: the isolation, losing contact with friends, losing one's sense of self, feeling worthless etc. without making the abuse super explicit which I appreciated--kinda deconstructing the idea that some behaviors aren't "bad enough" to be abusive. Obviously the depiction of emotional abuse in context of a queer relationship was also very good and very rare to find. A little bit like In the Dream House for young queers. I did find the novel a bit boring and young which makes sense given it is YA but I think this is a really important and well done story for younger people to read and explore issues of emotional abuse but also just growing up queer and trying to find yourself.

This one started out SO strong, and I really thought I was gonna get into it…and then the main character just kept falling into the same patterns over and over again, and being a terrible friend. It got exhausting after a while. There’s definitely some value here in this book and in these characters, particularly for queer teens. None of them were just developed enough for any of it to matter much in the end.

I read it because it won the Eisner award recently. I thought it was pretty good, but I clearly wasn’t the audience for it. The artwork is great.

one of my favorite books ever. it is beautiful. it is thoughtful and deep. each time i return to it the truth and love in its pages hits me. reflections on relationships, queerness, and growing up but all in fresh ways.
