A clever, well-paced, engaging play. The humour is timeless. Looking forward to seeing this on stage.

I read this as part of #12PlaysIn12Months and it's another I would not have picked up myself.
I really enjoyed this witty, short read.
Tartuffe has inveigled himself into the heart of Orgon's family, presenting himself as a wise and pious religious man he gains control over Orgon's mind and actions and steers them towards his own selfish gains.
The rest of the family see through Tartuffe but no reasoning on their part can lift the veil from Orgon's eyes and he would rather disinherit and lose the love of his family than admit his error in trusting Tartuffe.

This play is extremely clever in highlighting Tartuffe's machinations and the despair felt by the family. How can Orgon not see how he is being used and manipulated. Any protests the family make fall on deaf ears and are turned against them as examples of their impiety.
To read this is frustrating - you want to smack Orgon's head off a wall and make him see the light! Moliere captures the sense of helplessness felt by the family so well. He manages to paint Orgon as both an idiotic but also sympathetic character.

In today's age of the cult of personality, fake news and gaslighting this read as surprisingly modern.
Ultimately justice prevails and the balance of good sense is restored -perhaps the only unrealistic part of the play. Clever and funny, I really enjoyed this classic of French theatre.

This is the second Moliere play I've listened to as an audiobook this year, and I'm having more fun with his work than I expected. Tartuffe is surprisingly funny, bawdier than I'd expected, and makes great (and still relevant) points about religious hypocrisy. Definitely will be exploring his works further.

I was assigned to read Tartuffe for my Western Tradition class to write a paper on, and I surprisingly enjoyed it. I knew ahead of time that it was a comedy, but most old comedies are not necessarily funny to the modern era. However, Tartuffe remains itself funny even today. It definitely has a lot of historical context, displaying absolutism under King Louis XIV of France. The end of the play blatantly shows examples of it, seeing as the king had to grant permission for Moliere to publish Tartuffe and it was rejected multiple times before. Overall, the play was short yet heavy with plot, humorous, and enjoyable.

Lots of interesting social commentary packed into 80 pages of satire and irony. I haven’t laughed out loud this much with a class reading in a while.
