I didn't mean to read this book as fast as I did... But things happen.
This book was amazing, and I just love Gabe (hence why I read it so fast). Since I have friends that are transgender and friends that do radio, Gabe was very relatable for me. I think giving him a public yet anonymous way to be out was really cool, but it got pretty scary when the walls came down.
I appreciate this book because she didn't try to sugar coat it. She didn't say "being transgender is so easy!", she showed the nasty parts of it.

Edit: I wrote this review a few years ago and I think my opinions have changed about it. I do not think this is a good book, passable you can get enjoyment out of it. But I do not recommend it, I was starved for representation at the time and so excused the flaws. Representation is good, but it can't be the only reason people remember your story. And I'm not saying you can't write about others experiences, only it's very difficult and not something every writer can do. I actually snooped around and found an article on the author's blog looking back on the book. I really respect for saying that her book wasn't perfect and has offended some trans people. She seems like a nice person and an ally so good on her! But this book ehh.

It's flawed yeah, but it is written by a cis person, so it's not going to be perfect to the trans experience. Writing this review as a trans boy myself. It's flaws oddly weren't the trans parts but more the story itself. But I do rec it, for the drama and trans rep.
I really like the music aspect, however it with how much music contributes to the story, I do have a nitpick. I wish they went more psychological with how music affects people. Which they do with the radio show, but it felt lacking. I feel like as a musician, the book should also give me a bit of a musical inspiration. It feels more of a setting or bells and whistles.
I do appreciate how the book gets a bit psychological. Like Gabe's parents dissaproval does get to him, and makes him feel like he's in the wrong. But sometimes the transphobia just feels like a plot device or to build drama. It feels too dramatic. As a trans boy I feel transphobia doesn't just feel like bullying, it gets to me on a mental level. So I wish they used that more.
The drama up until the last few chapters is good though. It can be a bit hard to read, but it does make it feel real. And of course has some good lessons. Towards the end the drama felt cliche and cartoony, and kinda got in the way of all the side plots, making in a sweet ending, but a bit too quick.
And the romance kinda fell flat. I didn't like the romance aspect at first, warmed up to it, but thought it didn't resolve enough at the end.
I do like how the book starts off quite negative but slowly becomes more hopeful. You really earn the nice moments
Another nitpick is how men are portrayed. I feel like for a book about a trans man, the author kinda portrays other men in a toxic light. I wish there were more positive man characters I guess.
I do wish the book went deeper into the themes of being a trans man and music.
For the positives- I did enjoy it alot. Writing stories is hard, and writing about a trans persons's story, well that's even harder. I feel like you have to really dive into the drama to properly portray it. It can be really hard for someone who isn't trans. I only hope we can get more trans stories though.
I liked Gabe's character quite a bit, he was a good lead, he was flawed but still enjoyable. It's a story of dysphoria but also euphoria, and you really root for Gabe.
For a YA book, I like how it's written. It's got a youthful, expressive style to it, without being annoying.
I really enjoyed the book in general, maybe it's because I'm bias and crave trans man rep. But it was quite a good story, flawed yes. But still very good.
If you do want a good trans man read, try the manga Boys Run the Riot. I'm been reading it recently and it has quickly become a favorite of mine, especially since it's written by a trans man.

While I liked the characters, I disliked/was irritated by the voice. Sometimes it was spot on, but often it grated on me. I appreciated the basic bits in the back, and I will for sure put this in my library.

WOW, en serio, wow.
Realmente no esperaba que este libro me gustase tanto, más que nada porque no tenía ningún tipo de referencia sobre él, pero estoy contentísima de haberlo leído.
Nuestro protagonista, Gabe, un chico transexual (o chico, como preferiría llamarlo, pero haré esa distinción porque es importante para la trama) me sorprendió muy gratamente. Desde el primer momento dejó clara una cosa: su vida es suya y el mundo puede meterse sus opiniones por donde le quepa. Por supuesto, esta mentalidad tuvo ciertos puntos flacos a lo largo de la historia, pero eso es más que comprensible teniendo en cuenta lo que tiene que afrontar.
Pero que es transexual no es lo más importante sobre él (¡ni mucho menos!). Lo que de verdad importa es que ama la música. Y cuando digo que la ama, me refiero a casi de un modo obsesivo-compulsivo xD Admiro bastante a esa gente que tiene un gran conocimiento en un tema artístico (especialmente en uno que me guste pero del que desconozca la mayor parte de las cosas, como es el caso de la música y el cine). Nunca había visto tantos cantantes/grupos juntos. Ciertamente fue intenso xD Por lo que si amas la vieja música (la buena música XD), es probable que ames a Gabe.
El resto de personajes también fueron interesantes (destacan John y Paige, de los que hablaré más adelante, pero los demás también son dignos de mención. Fue interesante ver como su familia lidiaba con todo el tema de aceptar que su hija era en realidad su hijo, y también ver al resto de gente que le conocía como Liz (Elizabeth) se adaptaba a verlo como Cabe. Hubieron un par de imbéciles (muy realista su comportamiento, dicho sea de paso) que me pusieron muy nerviosa, pero bueno.
Paige es la mejor amiga de Gabe. Me cayó bien, es una chica inteligente y le apoyaba con todo el tema de la transexualidad, por lo que tiene mi visto bueno xD No me suelen gustar las chicas a las que les encanta la ropa, los accesorios y el maquillaje, peeeero teniendo en cuenta que Paige lee, puedo hacer la vista gorda xD Eso sí, menudo cliché el hecho de que estuviese en cierto modo enamorado de su mejor amiga xD (No es un spoiler, lo dice al principio).
John es su vecino, el hombre que le consiguió un trabajo en la radio para hacer su show ("Beautiful Music for Ugly Children", de ahí el título del libro), su mentor (xD) en lo que a música se refiere y alguien a quien quiere como si fuera de su familia. Me gustó mucho este hombre (setenta años y es más abierto de mente que varios adolescentes que conozco), es un personaje genial.
Volviendo momentáneamente a los imbéciles, digo y repito aquí que nunca entenderé ese tipo de gente. ¿Te duele que una persona no considere que su cuerpo sea acorde con como se siente? ¿Te afecta de algún modo? ¿Es un crimen? ¿Hace daño a alguien? Déjame que te responda: ¡NO! No, pequeña neurona sin desarrollar, no. Las personas transexuales, homosexuales, bisexuales (etc, etc) no tienen un problema, TÚ tienes un problema. Bueno, de hecho tienes varios, teniendo en cuenta que la discriminación es considerada ilegal en una nombrosa cantidad de países (por desgracia, menos nombrosa de lo que debería, pero espero que mejore con el tiempo). Así que párate a pensar tus acciones antes de hacer algo de lo que quizás te arrepientas algún día.
Dicho todo esto, solo me queda felicitar a la autora por tan buen trabajo, y recomendar a todo el mundo que lea este libro ^-^
