I just felt like the author wasn’t really connected to what the trans experience may be? Not that I am one to speak on that topic but. Also the main character was kind of a snob? Like made me think of teenage boys who think they know everything about anything and are like oh you like this band? Well name five songs that aren’t their most popular ones.

Nearly a four star book, but some plot points rang implausible to me. Nonetheless, glad to see such an articulate and charming discussion about gender, as told through the book's trans protagonist.

This book was simply beautiful. Reading this made me wish I knew Gabe and could give him a huge hug. My heart goes out to people who feel like they were born in the wrong body. First they have to come to terms with it and then get heat from their families and losers who think they are an abomination. I loved the characters especially John. Gabe's parents emotions were real. I know it couldn't have been easy for them to have a little girl and then one day that little girl tell them they were really a boy. Paige was a sweetheart and I got pissed off when she stopped talking to Gabe but after what happened with the two jerks I could kind of understand. Thank God for John, Paige and music, particularly Elvis. Without those three Gabe probably wouldn't be alive. I love how each chapter title has something to do with Elvis. Tip, if you aren't familiar with most of the songs talked about, please download them or listen to them on Youtube. This book had some wonderful music in it.

I really really hope there is a sequel that follows Gabe as he makes the physical transformation and his life in college. I hope you're reading this Kirstin Cronn-Mills! :-)

Oh and this NEEDS to be made into a movie.

Definitely an interesting subject, but I think I wanted to like it more than I actually did.

As a trans man myself, I can say this is very well written and the emotions are high in this one, so if you are to read it, be prepared for feelings of anger, sadness, and betrayal. There's happy feelings too so don't worry about that. Gabe's personality and character is extremely unique, yet follows some of the stereotypes of trans people (it's not a bad thing) I'd recommend this book to anyone willing to read it!

A great book about the struggle of being trans-gender, tolerance and searching for love. There is also a healthy dose of love of music from Elvis to the present....a part that works for me but might be lost on the target YA reading audience.

Book #13 completed for Book Riot Challenge 2016: "A book by or about a person that identifies as transgender"
It wasn't bad, the characters were lovable and relatable. It wasn't too saccherin-sweet like most teen novels, but it wasn't too dark either. The prose was very middle school-y in my opinion though and there were a couple of discrepancies (eg. "She wore her hair in a messy bun. ---She flipped her hair and walked out" huh, I bet that looked pretty stupid). But overall, it's written with great intentions to put a light on the transgender community to help the rest of us understand what they go through.

DNF. We need more books about trans kids yes but I just didn't enjoy the main characters attitude of that of his friends. I really wanted to like it bc i love books about queer kids and music etc, but just... not for me.
