I like David Baldacci's writing style. He doesn't assault the reader with an over abundance of useless detail, as some authors do. His books are fast paced and action filled while, at the same time, clear and straight forward. I have read everything he has written with the exception of his children's titles. While I would not necessarily label this book as my favorite, it was definitely a great read that I would recommend to those who enjoy a good murder mystery from the Sam Spade style of a bygone era. Well done.

Aloysius Archer - out of prison and in search of a job - heads to Bay City, CA to become a detective working for Willie Dash. Stops in Reno where he picks up a car and a showgirl. On to Bay City where they unravel a plot to derail a mayoral campaign that starts with blackmail and leads to murder.
Set in 1950 - Archer and Dash are a couple of no nonsense detectives who are going to root out crime.

It breaks my heart to rate a Baldacci book with two stars but this one was simply boring. I think I just need to pass on any more Archer books if they appear. This series just isn’t Baldacci at his best.

Typical Baldacci. Interestng spin with the 1950s cultural portrayal.

Enjoyed this one a lot. The plot twists and turns kept me guessing, and the finale was appropriately thrilling. It's kind of a cross between the worlds of Philip Marlowe and Perry Mason, and it totally works.
