Ugh. This writing was elementary at best and yet also sexist. So maybe I read a different book than everyone else?

Excellent book!

I wish he had written a memoir instead of this story because the author had a lot of important things to say about racism (especially in the world of orchestra) and the ripple effects of poverty but I don’t think that this particular story was the most effective way to convey that. I was most moved by the afterward which was far more personal and impacting than the plot of the book.

This was an interesting story that takes you all over the world. It’s written simply in a very readable style. It’s awkward at times, but that doesn’t detract from enjoyment.

I really enjoyed this, if not for the actual robbery storyline (a little predictable) but to read about the experiences of a Black classical violinist. It made me think about how many times I've been to an orchestra performance (VSO and TSO, I'm looking at you) and I can't recall ever seeing a Black musician. The author's note at the end indicates that all of the racist experiences in the story were based on real events for him. However, it's clear his talent and love for the art...the music, the instrument and the audience, inspires him beyond the racism and bigotry.

I thought the mystery was solid. Written well enough by a music teacher. I loved how the main character described the pictures he was seeing while he played certain passages. Explores racism in America, especially in the classical music world. Some of the scenes of racism I thought, "isn't this a little heavy handed?" But then I realized I sometimes think that when racists racist in the real world too. Read for my genre book club.
