my first Sherlock story. Really enjoyed it and the wording wasn't too difficult to understand. the backstory bit in the middle was unexpected and took some concentration but all in all I enjoyed it!

Hoewel ik al talloze hervertellingen van het beroemde Sherlock Holmes verhaal heb gelezen, heb ik nooit het origineel gelezen. Rainbox to the rescue! Ik had dit boek willen lezen voor we naar het Sherlock Holmes museum in Londen gingen, maar helaas was het boek pas bij de boekwinkel toen ik al in de trein zat. Gelukkig kon ik afgelopen weekend, met alle herinneringen aan 221b Baker Street, eindelijk beginnen!

Dit boek is overduidelijk een boek van zijn tijd en past heel goed naast de boeken van Agatha Christie. Het verhaal is behoorlijk rechtlijnig. Er is een moord of mysterie en het is aan Sherlock Holmes om het op te lossen. Holmes ziet allerlei aanwijzingen die andere mensen over het hoofd zien en puzzel op die manier alles aan elkaar! Ik vond het wel enorm tof dat we de uiteindelijke oplossing vaak ook nog echt te lezen kregen vanuit de dader. Het maakte het enorm makkelijk om mee te leven en de motieven te begrijpen.

Ik heb nu al zin om aan het tweede deel te beginnen! En nog meer hervertellingen te lezen!

A great place to start in the Sherlock Holmes series.

Part one was fabulous and covers Holmes and Watson meeting and getting to know each other. Holmes starts investigating a murder and Watson is pulled along for the ride!

Part two of the book is a seemingly complete separate story (which threw me off for a while) but it all came together in the end!

I’ll probably keep reading the collection, I do love the prose and language. Plus I need to see more of the adventures of Holmes and Watson that has inspired so many different interpretations
