Cute, but wasn't as interesting as the first two.

I really enjoy this graphic novel series, and I think this one is my favorite! It brought back sooooo many memories from middle school--I felt my crushes with all my heart and soul! And Jorge is such a sweetheart, I loved seeing things from his point of view.

I’m a fan of Awkward and Brave, but Crush is now my favorite of the Berrybrook Middle School books! I adored this honest portrayal of crushing in middle school complete with awkwardness and flaws. Jorge is a reluctant crusher, which speaks to the fact that we can’t always control who we crush on. Chmakova’s illustrations accurately capture the myriad of emotions experienced by these relatable characters. Olivia, Garrett, and Jorge are quite a trio. Favorite quote from Olivia, “I mean, loyalty! Look it up! And get you some!” Love it.

So I read this because I love Svetlana's manga series.
I was not disappointed even though this is aimed at a younger crowd than her manga series. Her humor and amazing character writing shone strong just as always.
This book deals with middle school romance, bullying, consent and breaking stereotypes.

I picked this up from a little free library for my classroom because my students love graphic novels. I read it quick to see if it was appropriate for them. Mostly, I thought it was. A couple of swear words, though. Also, it was hilarious to me how many characters were boyfriend/girlfriend in middle school. I liked how it very naturally included diverse characters without making a big deal of it. I also appreciated how it brought it topics like body autonomy in an age-appropriate way. Not sure if it’s the right fit for my classroom, though

After teaching in middle school for so many years, these characters all seemed to be real to me. They were not just one-dimensional characters, but more like real kids. Their lives are complicated and messy. As a shy kid myself when I was in that grade, I really related to the main character, Jorje. Good read.

Really enjoyed this graphic novel! Felt genuine and current. Jorge Ruiz is my absolute favorite guy in this series and I hope he makes more appearances in the future.

I enjoyed all of the different characters and the uncertainty that Jorge felt when he encountered Jazmine. I’m kind of surprised that this graphic novel is set in middle school. That makes sense, I guess. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in middle school :)
Jorge was a great main character and I love that he stood up for what is right and that he prioritized his school work. This graphic novel had it’s share of drama and the hacked social media account was a timely touch.
I’m looking forward to reading more of Chmakova’s work. (I think I spelled her name right).
