I love V.E. Schwab's writings although this is only the second book of hers that I've read. This book demonstrates that dialogue isn't so much necessary to make a book good, Olivia speaks with her mind and she's a brilliant main character. She critically internalizes her curiosity. She's the epitome of Gallant just as the book's title, just as the name of the mansion, just as the Priors before her. The world building in this book is excellent and every chapter keeps you hooked to want to know more; what happens next, what will Olivia do.

However, this book is not without its shortcoming. The plot starts to fall flat in the last 20% of it. It's as if the author wants to wrap up the story as soon as possible and it almost feels anti-climactic as the revelation and realm crafting of the book feels grander than the actual climax of the story. I also wish we have a better closure with Olivia's parents after we learn what happened to them. Nevertheless, I think despite this, the writing skills of V.E. Schwab through the lens of Olivia is superb and that alone is enough to make up for this book's imperfections.
