adventurous dark mysterious

I feel like this could've used a bit more characterization and depth - like I wish it was set up more to draw the concept out over a duology or trilogy - but it was so atmospheric and just in general fun to read.

THE EPILOGE SAVED THIS BOOK 100% LIKE I CRIED!!!!! the rest of the book was like idk. It was okay, not up to par with most of Schwab's other books, but it was still really really good. The atmosphere is what really stood out to me. This book felt both creepy and safe. The repeated theme of home is what you chose was just really sweet. Olivia was amazing, and I was really scared that her muteness was going to get cured somehow, but it didn't! V.E would never do something like that to me. Also I'll say it bc every was thinking it: Death was hot!!! He's a hottie!!! He's not completely justified with everything he did, like he still sucks, but I can excuse him for a couple of minor things. I liked this book, the family elements were really strong and I loved all of the characters.

This was a secret garden-meets-coralline story.

The first half was interesting and kept me hooked, but the second half fell a bit flat for me. After the author spent time creating mystery and building the world of gallant, the ending was missing the same intrigue as the beginning.
