Gallant

This is my first experience with V. E. Schwab, and I have really enjoyed it! I liked the book being divided into parts based on the storyline. The world building was great! I absolutely LOVE when there’s like a fringe aspect—basically, the Gallant of color and the Gallant of death and gray. Olivia being able to travel past the wall to give us a view of that gave to such a better understanding of the villain we were dealing with.

I wish I could’ve gotten to know the other characters a little more and spent more time with them. Overall, this book is great—full of adventure, mystery, magic, fantasy. All the pieces are there… but I’m really angry about Matthew’s death!! I am not a fan of killing off main characters. Also, what about the Gallant beyond the wall? Is it just going to stay there? What if the shadows come back? I mean it seems like they will since gray weeds constantly grow in the garden. When will the curse end, if ever?

“like this, it seems to say, and she places her hands, just like he showed her, and begins, haltingly, to play”

Gallant was a good book, but it didn’t leave a lasting impression. I listened to the audiobook version, so it’s possible the pacing felt different than in print, but by the time I fully understood what the stakes were, it felt like it was much later in the story than it should’ve been. For a while, it just felt like the main character was settling into a mysterious house where people didn’t like her and she could see ghosts, and not much more than that.

That said, there were moments I really liked. The ending made me sad, especially what happens with the other  relative in the house. That moment hit harder than I expected.

Still, the book fell kind of in the middle for me. It wasn’t bad at all, it just didn’t stand out. I don’t think I’ll remember most of the plot in six months, maybe just one or two moments.

Wow! I’m not really sure to begin, but I really enjoyed this book! I liked the visuals in the book as well as the story itself!

Olivia is at the Merilance School for Girls where she gets a letter from her Uncle inviting her to this place called Gallant. Olivia doesn’t know much about Gallant, except that in her mother’s journal she tells her she’s safe as long as she stays away from Gallant.

It starts off slow, but once Olivia gets to Gallant, a lot starts to happen. She discovers another place that’s just like Gallant, except it’s not and it’s more of the shadow world of it.

The pace of this book is steady and does pick up around the middle/closer to the end of the book. This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author, but I can’t wait to see what her other books are like.
