Olivia + Hannah = Ohana – Family. How much will Olivia do to escape the orphanage and rescue her family’s home from ghouls, curses, and Death? Mute Olivia, with only her mother’s journal, struggles to unravel her past and find her future. Fantasy.

Before she died, Olivia Prior’s mother abandoned her at Merilance School for Independent Girls with only her mother’s journal. Matron Sarah taught mute Olivia how to sign, but all the other matrons and girls bullied and abused Olivia. None of them learned to sign. Olivia was strong and fought back.

I really liked this! Another library audiobook find. I'm loving V.E. Schwab's writing, although her metaphors grew a little repetitive in the beginning of this one (please stop saying 'silverfish').
Spooky secret garden upside-down.
Mysterious, unique perspectives, and I always love a family and/or house with a deep dark secret -- lost my attention for a bit in the middle but I'd still recommend it to others.

V. E. Schwab does it again with beautiful writing that traps you into this wonderful world. I flew through this because I couldn't put it down. I loved the exploration of death and grief (a common theme I've noticed throughout her stories). Also, the physical book itself was beautiful! From the design inside with the drawings to the shape of the book itself. I already want to reread this to soak it all up again!

5 star read.

V.E. Schwab just immediately sucked me into Olivia's world, and I'm not certain I'm ready to have left it so quickly. I could not put this down.

“Safe does not mean happy, does not mean well, does not mean kind.”

“I am so happy. I am so scared.
The two, it turns out, can walk together, hand in hand.”

The quotes are endless in this book. I'm already thinking about a reread honestly.
