What a unique story! I finished it really quickly because I wanted to know how it would end. I’ve read one previous book by this author and really like her writing style. It reminded me a bit of Mexican Gothic so if you like that book you’ll enjoy this one.
Olivia's inability to speak or sob or to scream amplifies the spookiness of this book and the trapped feeling the character often experiences. I love female characters who get even.. dumping bugs in the girl who tore her only heirloom? Amazing! The way she knocks things to the ground when angry because people will turn away from her when they don't want to hear what she's trying to "say" was so impactful and sad to me. The author describes the ghouls and the dark gallant house falling into disarray in such a strong haunting way it perfectly sets the story. I felt I was tiptoing around w Olivia trying to fade into the grey without making a noise.
I generally enjoyed this book. I've read Vicious and didn't really like it as much as I thought I would... Gallant has deeper characters than Vicious but I was still left wanting more from them. The ending was a bit predictable and Matthews sacrifice rang largely hollow to me. But the house! The haunted garden. The love story between Olivia's human mother and deaths fourth shadow, her father. The fake prior brother. THE GHOULS! Perfect for spooky season if your looking for a lighter book.
