3.5 stars rounded up. Similar (and predictable) story lines and plot devices of any Ken Follett book: political intrigue and conniving, unrequited love, rape scenes, betrayal, religious figures who are greedy for power, anachronistic dialogue, and the realities of severe poverty in which most peasants lived. A decent read, but not his best.

Hit all the usual beats you'd expect from a Follett doorstop, but that's not a bad thing! An interesting look at a period of history skimmed over in UK schools (probably because little information about the era has survived) - when I was growing up, we skipped straight from the Romans to the Normans.
Ken Follett is such an excellent storyteller! This book hooked me from the very first page and held my interest all the way to the end. While it’s not without its flaws, such as some uber cringe-worthy depictions of sex and the lack of satisfying justice for the despicable villains Follett crafts so well, the overall experience was thoroughly enjoyable. The novel strikes the perfect balance between historical fiction and drama, making its 900+ pages fly by. Well done!
