It's not on par with Pillars of the Earth, but it's still a good book. I like that Follett always makes life in 1000AD relatable and interesting. Yes he has a bit of a formula and he sticks to it 100% in this book, and yeah his sex scenes from the female point of view are cringe-y, but any author that can keep me invested for 25 hours of audiobook deserves at least 4 stars.

Ken follet has achieved brilliance again! How clever to write a prequel to the best trilogy I have ever read! It may be a personal preference but pillars of the earth and the following books in the series tick all my boxes!
As did the previous books in the series, this book was great weaving of the lives of so many interesting people. Although the author took obvious historical liberties, he clearly put in a lot of effort learning the history and archaeology of the time period, and made efforts to be accurate when possible. Another great read from a fabulous writer.
