3.5
A lot less misogynistic than the other books in the series which is an improvement and yet I still like the first book better.

I’ve subtracted two stars because of the unnecessary gratuitous sex. What purpose did it serve? None. Why does someone as gifted in storytelling as Follett believe that this enhances the story in any way? It served no purpose and took away from what would have otherwise been a great book.

A prequel to [b:The Pillars of the Earth|5043|The Pillars of the Earth (Kingsbridge, #1)|Ken Follett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576956100l/5043._SY75_.jpg|3359698]. How could you read the original trilogy and then not read this.

This book tells the story of a Normal Nobel woman, an Ealderman, a bishop, a monk, and a builder. These are just the main characters. As with the previous books, there are a multitude of characters, giving the story many dimensions.

This prequel tells the story of Kingsbridge before there was a Kingsbridge.

The Evening and the Morning 997 - 1007
Pillars of the Earth covers 1123 -1174
World Without End 1327 - 1361
Column of Fire 1558 - 1605

As with the previous novels, Follet writes wicked bad guys and moral good guys and both are brilliant and cunning. Again this is a story of power and class and corruption. However, even though Follet has already told this story, I loved it. I fell in love with/hated the characters and wanted could not wait to see how their lives unfolded. I hurt at the protagonists struggles and losses and rejoiced with their victories.

The only part I am having trouble with.
SpoilerThe time between the end of The Evening and the Morning and the beginning of The Pillars of the Earth, is only 116 years. 3 generations, yet none of the characters seem to lead to the characters of Pillars.

I would love to see this series continue into the future and unofficially connect into the Century Trilogy.

An amazing read, but not quite on the same level as the rest of the trilogy

I loved this book! It was long and intricate, like a typical Ken Follett historical novel, but the storyline was captivating. I’m his other books sometimes I felt the storyline and character development came second to all the historical detail. While I love the history, I usually fine myself pushing through at some point until I am pulled back into the story. But not with this book. I was riveted from the chaotic start when Edgar is introduced all the way through to the conclusion of his story. I think I read this novel faster than any of Follett’s others because I had to know what happened next. Well-written, intriguing, and so much great history! I rooted for Ragna and Edgar all the way through!

I don't think I have hated anyone as much as that Bishop, his brother and his cousin.

On a second thought, there is that brother-in-law of the main character in a book, Ship of Magic, by Robin Hobb. He is probably the biggest piece of shit I have had the misfortune to read about.
