A typical Ken Follet book. Mesmerizing, impossible to put down, goes by to fast. Seriously, great characters, whom he makes suffer until all is wrapped up satisfactorily. Although part of the Pillars of the earth series, absolutely a stand-alone book. Highly recommended.

Nobody can tell a story like Ken Follett. He has the ability to transport you back in time & make you feel so deeply about the characters that you can’t put his novels down. And they are mammoth...nearly 1,000 pages! The Evening and the Morning is a prequel to Pillars of the Earth (one of my favorite books, ever!). It is set in the Dark Ages of England around the year 997 CE. From castles, to monasteries & even ale houses...you “Blue Skidoo” right into the picture like Blues Clues to a grand tale of good vs evil.

The Evening and the Morning follows the story of life in the Middle Ages & explains how the town of Kingsbridge (Drengs Ferry) came to be. From the working class & slaves, to powerful women, clergy & nobles...Follett takes you on a journey of romance, adventure & tragedy.

You are immediately drawn to the characters...this is Follett’s gift. While there are many characters...the story is built around these three:

• Ragna (the daughter of a wealthy Norman count) falls in love with the English ealdorman Wilfwulf. Her story in set in the English village of Shiring where she struggles to prevail against the evil brothers, Wilgelm & Wynstan & her awful stepmother, Gytha. Throughout most of the book you are cheering her on.

• Edgar (a young, poor workingman) has a brilliant mind & a heart of gold. He knows how to build things from boats to bridges. Edgar is every woman’s dream in the Dark Ages. He is a true romantic & even loves a cute dog, Brindle...which I found strange to emphasize for the time period. He represents everything good in the world about men...both then & now.

“In dog philosophy it was always better to go somewhere than to be left behind.”

• Aldred (a monk in Shiring) is a moral & ethical man who is living in a corrupt society with dishonest superiors. He befriends Edgar & Ragna & finds himself in a constant battle to do the right thing. Like seriously...you’ll be saying “Thank God for Aldred” throughout the book.

Bottom line...you won’t find many quotes to highlight in The Evening and the Morning. However, the book's superpower is the ability to entertain & educate you about what life was like more than 1,000 years ago. I highly recommend this & all of Ken Follett’s books. This was my 4th & I’ll be starting Column of Fire next.
