Will the fiesty heroine find happiness? Will the young builder make his mark on the world? Will the evil priest meet a horrible end? Will the earnest monk stay true to his calling? I think we all know the answers to these pressing questions, but I like the audiobook narrator, John Lee, so it was a good book to listen to while walking.

It was fun to read how Kingsbridge came to be. The Pillars of the Earth is still Follett’s most brilliant book, and this was a very similar story… good builder lovesick for an unattainable woman and up against corrupt bishop. But it’s a great story and I still enjoyed it!

Wonderful book that I struggled not to read in one long sitting. The various plot lines all interweave perfectly and lead to a very satisfying conclusion. An absolutely fitting prequel to Pillars of the Earth.

Ken Follett is a master. It follows his formula but nevertheless it’s shocking and there are twists and turns throughout. Loved it
