Prequel to the Kingsbridge series. Perceived this as a tighter written book but wonder if it is that because I have already read the other books and know what's coming? Ether way enjoyable

It was an entertaining the read, at some point I read trough the book very feast eager to know what will happen, but most of it was normally paced reading.

I was a bit conflicted about the ending though;
I did like that everything got resolved, however it felt a bit too fairy-tale ish, I expected something darker

Follett writes brilliant historical fiction. I've never had to worry about a stray anachronism jolting me out of reading.

This is the pre-qual to his Kingsbridge series. The book focuses on a handful of characters spanning the class system of Anglo-Saxon England starting at the end of the 10th century. The book ihas exceptional prose and the casual reader learns about early medieval England without feeling like it's a lesson.

Follett writes his characters with stark honesty. You'll really love some and hate others. The narrator is excellent!

Another excellent book by Ken Follett. Not as good as the original Kingsbridge Trilogy, but all the same, he can write a hell of a story. He’s a natural storyteller, perhaps the best alive today when it comes to historical fiction and I hope he has plans to write another.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed 80% of this book. Pages 600-800 were a bit slow, and there is an overall formula that is followed here - which is to be expected. I remember not enjoying Column of Fire. Here there really wasn't an aspect I didn't enjoy. The pace was great - which really is Follett's strong suit. The story was worth reading and the prequel aspects made sense.

It would be interesting to see if in the future, people read these in chronological order or if they stick to publishing order.

Well described 3d characters again and a lot of ups and downs that kept me wanting to read on

the world building, the storytelling, the characters- unrivalled. I loved Edgar, I hated Wynstan and Wigelm and I rifled through the book to find out if Ragna would be okay. i usually read more modern historical fiction than this, from the tudor period onwards, and it was great to read something from further back. will be continuing the series

As the author says at the end, not a lot is known about the Dark Ages, but I felt that this brought it to life. Enjoyable escapism reading about the village of Kingsbridge coming to life
