I might even have enjoyed this more than Pillars.
Superb in every way.

Part of the Kingsbridge series based in the Dark Ages. This is the prequel to The Pillars of the Earth but you can truly read these in any order. I’m a BIG Follett fan. Reading this series (each book is >900 pages) is a commitment, for sure, but he knows how to create an immersive world full of love, ambition, power, and family drama that you can get lost in easily.

Maybe it's my fault for binge-reading the entire Kingsbridge series in a few weeks, but I am thoroughly fed up with Follett's characters, plots and prose. To put it simply, Follett is a one-trick pony. It's even difficult writing my individual review for each book in the series because of their similar content. It seems that Follett merely takes the same cast of characters and plot points and transposes them into a new historical period. Admittedly, he is amazing at this: his books are a rich tapestry of thrilling moments and historical details, which always manage to entertain. However, I'm tired of reading the same book, and I'm unfortunately ending my Kingsbridge journey with a lower opinion of Follett than I started.

As much as I have enjoyed Ken Follett’s books over the decades, this one seemed to be more of a soap opera. I would have liked him to explore early ship building and then a transition to building the cathedral.
