The prequel to the Kingsbridge saga is as engrossing and as well crafted as the novels preceding it. Covering the ten years from 997 to 1007 CE, the novel follows the lives of Ragna of Cherbourg and Edgar, boat builder and stonemason, and their struggle against a corrupt and vicious family led by Bishop Wynstan, as well as the rise of Kingsbridge from a humble cluster of buildings at a ferry to the seat of a great cathedral.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. But beware that you will have trouble putting it down once you have started.

A highly enjoyable book, I was gripped throughout.
Something that put me off however, was the lack of wins for the protagonists. The antagonists kept getting their way, and every time there was a tiny win for the good guys it was immediately overruled and they were set back again.
Of course it all comes good in the end but it's mostly due to luck and not anything the very intelligent protagonists actually do right.
I wish it had been a bit more back and forth but I still thoroughly enjoyed.
